['miʃkolts], Hauptstadt des Bezirks Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Nordungarn, am Ostrand des Bükkgebirges, mit 172 400 Einwohner die drittgrößte Stadt Ungarns; TU (gegründet 1949), Zentralmuseum des Hüttenwesens u. a. Museen; Eisen- und Stahlindustrie im Stadtteil Diósgyőr (1950 eingemeindet), Maschinenbau, Zement-, Holz-, Papier-, Textilindustrie. Der Stadtteil Tapolca, der unterirdische Höhlen mit Seen hat, ist Kurort.
 
 
Die gotische Kirche am Avasberg (Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts) wurde mehrfach umgebaut; nach Brand 1560-69 neu errichtet.
 
 
Miskolc geht auf eine skythische Siedlung zurück; 1365 als Weinmarkt nachgewiesen, 1405 königliche Freistadt; kam nach 1526 (Schlacht bei Mohács) zum königlichen Ungarn, war dann kurzfristig siebenbürgisch. Im Grenzraum gelegen, hatte Miskolc durch türkische Raubzüge und Doppelbesteuerung zu leiden.
